Kanye West says “slavery was a choice” on TMZ

“400 years of slavery, that sounds like a choice”.

Kanye West has been known for his controversial and opinionated views. ‘Ye was being interviewed by TMZ and his support of Trump was brought into question. He defended his support of Trump based on their personal relationship.  Kanye also brought up a good point about Trump being cool in hip-hop until he ran for President.  Then, he followed up by speaking about mental imprisonment in the black community and that’s when he said “When you hear about slavery for 400 years…For 400 years?! That sounds like a choice”…

On social media, people are saying that “Kanye is just being himself” in an attempt to break down his statements on a deeper level and I don’t fully agree with that.

I’m not surprised by his comments really but, I am disappointed because the artist who made “Jesus Walks” and said “George Bush didn’t care about black people.” on national television is so far gone, and it’s sad to see.  It makes you want to ask exactly what happened between Kanye and Jay-Z that caused them to stop speaking.

Through Kanye, we are witnesses to the lengths people will go to, to reach success in America.  Kanye has immersed himself into a culture and society that does not accept who we are.  We have to be what other people want for us to advance.

Slaves were forced here. Slavery still happens and shows in different forms but it raises a good question. After 400 years, when do we stand up for ourselves against racism in America?  To reach a level of success in America, it seems like  several people would rather adapt and forget who they are rather than stand true to who they are.

There was no choice in slavery.  The concept of slavery still exists.
