Five Rap Songs That Inspire Me
I wanted to write about the five rap songs that inspire the hell out of me. There’s a lot of songs that speak to my soul but here are the five rap songs that have inspired my music career. These are in no particular order, I have more than five rap songs of course, but these are based on the feeling they give me.
5. Real Love (Remix) by Mary J. Blige and Notorious B.I.G
If it wasn’t for this song, I don’t know if being a hip-hop artist would’ve been my dream. This song has to be in my top I was about 7 years old in Brooklyn. It was the first time I went out with my older sister and I remember her walking into our car with her headphones on. She spat Biggie’s lyrics “So what’s it gonna be? The real one, the fake one…” and all I remember was being amazed by it. I started responding back to her thinking she was speaking to me, and then she let me hear the full song. I knew at that moment I wanted to rap.
4. If I Ruled The World by Nas ft. Lauryn Hill
My mom was a model and a make up artist for her profession. In case you don’t know, I’m of Haitian decent and back in New York I had the opportunity to meet Lauryn Hill at a Haitian church she had visited. Our meeting was short but we spoke creole and I got a forehead kiss out of it. Shortly after that meeting, I remember “If I Ruled The World” dropping. This song opened my mind up so much and as a kid it made me dream big. I kept that song on repeat and still to this day I play it most mornings to start my day.
3. Empire State of Mind by Jay-Z
Through and through, Jay-Z is my biggest influence and favorite hip-hop artist of all time. It goes without saying that the man has made several classics but for me, the lyrics to this song make me want to be the best. This song says to me that dreams do come true. I take pride in being from Bedstuy and this song makes me know anything is possible. Of course “New York State of Mind” makes my 5 rap songs!

2. Hussle and Motivate by Nipsey Hussle
This song speaks to my soul so much. I’m a person who was devastated at the untimely loss of Nipsey Hussle last year and when Victory Lap came out, it stayed on repeat. The tribute to “Hard Knock Life” by Jay-Z is nothing short of a classic. I want to take this moment to say we miss you Nip. Your impact on the hip-hop culture is felt.
1. Bounce Back by Big Sean
“Last night took an L but tonight I bounce back!” This song is my shit. I identify with losing and coming back up like I’m sure a lot of you do. A few years back, this was the song that had me hyped and made me believe that I would get back up after being knocked down. There was so many times I felt like giving up and if this song played, it would remind me of how much I have accomplished.
